Potato Day - Rained Off

I collected the well-chitted spuds from my mum's. Some had great little chits (like this photo of  a kestrel) Quite alien looking isn't it?!
but some of the others had some crazy long chits, especially the Bonnies and Orlas.
Never mind, the plan was to get them all planted up today. You can see, however, from our printed plan below that it was a very wet day... I'll upload this plan to the Crop Rotation Plan page later - with an explanation of why it looks so involved!
We only got one line planted - a trench with well-rotted manure in the bottom. Then we sat in the car watching the rain and drinking a coffee and couldn't face doing another row - it would have been more tricky without the path alongside us and the ground was too wet really :-( Disappointing, not sure whether they'll get done till next week now as this weekend looks like it's going to be rained off completely. Boooo

  1. Yeah, I know your pain on this. My work was kind of "rained off" as well. http://martin-way-plot30.blogspot.co.uk/2013/04/bits-and-pieces.html

Hopefully things will be drier tomorrow.

  2. Hi Belinda,
You'll see from my blog photos that my Orlas have produced similar long chitted stems compared to the rest of the varieties.Glad that I got all my spuds in last week before the rain spread up from the South!
Impressed by the large stones that you are digging up (previous post).I know the feeling as I'm still unearthing a few whoppers from ground that I thought I'd done a thorough job on last year.I'm trying to keep most of the smaller stones in the soil to help with drainage.

    1. Oh yes! Your chits look just the same as ours! Hopefully we'll get the rest of our 'firsts' in today, or one evening this week....

It's amazing how you can miss such a giant stone!

  3. We managed to get the plot ones in but Steve did the garden ones in drizzle. Tomorrow is supposed to be good. Perhaps you can do it then.

    1. It's looking bright at the moment but as usual on a Sunday we're on a go-slow. It could be raining again in the next 10 minutes! Well, it is April I suppose...
